Since we’re teenagers, and we all know the whole world is against us, it’s often hard to maintain a positive attitude. We have all been told at least once how our attitude can affect our lives, but not until recently did I truly understand how true that concept is.
My church holds an annual volleyball tournament, with players that age from 14-18. The teams are split up by what group you attend church with, so you know your teammates from church every week. Our team had won the tournament five out of the last six years, and we were ready to claim the trophy once again.
The first game we were stoked, and expected an easy victory– we were wrong. The minute one of our players missed a ball, we turned on each other, getting angry and frustrated.
Yet it was no coincidence that once we became upset our performance decreased. We made more and more mistakes, missing serves, dropping balls, and not paying attention. Whenever another player messed up, we got upset, ignoring all of our previous mistakes.
Our coaches noticed our decline, and one timeout was all we needed to change things around. They basically told us to lift our heads up, and focus on success. That small encouragement brought our thoughts back into focus, and we were psyched and ready to play.
The minute we adjust our attitudes, we notice a change. As Coach Johnson always said, “Work hard. Get better.” Once we realized everything was up to us, we were able to shift our way of thinking, and do our best.
This same principle can help us in our everyday life. If we stop constantly complaining about school and lack of sleep, we can in
turn finish our work and live happier and with less stress.
Attitude is often influenced by our environment, and those who are around us. Just try to stay positive around someone who is constantly complaining about life.
I figure that every time we see someone, we have an opportunity to affect them positively or negatively. Why spread negativity when we can help lift people up. Especially with this economic depression, we should help lift people up instead of tearing them down.
Attitudes are contagious, and a slight adjustment can make a world of difference. If we think positive, and keep our goals in mind, we can achieve more and do our best.
