JV girls basketball plans to succeed with new coach

JV girls basketball is heading into their winter season this year with new players, a new head coach and a fired up attitude.

“We want to be undefeated and win as many games as we can for the season,” sophomore Hailey Leighton said.

The girls are certainly making their way towards that goal with a near undefeated record in their tournament that finished yesterday. The team’s new head coach, Roger Enderson, is looking forward to this year too and plans to create a cohesive and balanced team.

“I am looking to see how well we do as a whole instead of individuals,” Enderson said. “What I mean by that is there will be no one girl team; it takes 5 girls to make a basket, not one.”

Though the Valley League officially starts on Jan. 6 with a home game against Ramona, the girls have been practicing hard to become the team Enderson has imagined since November.

“We goof around, but we get better at things we need to work on,” Leighton said.

Enderson is just as optimistic about the basketball team’s progress during practice and in their recent tournament.

“The girls are doing awesome so far,” Enderson said. “I am loving every minute of it.”

What’s more, he finds that his team is as talented as it is hard working and fun.

“As my first year as head coach I would say this group of girls that I have are very talented and smart,” Enderson said. “They understand the game of basketball and they get after it, which I like.”

The team is just as excited about the basketball and the coming season as their coach is.

“It’s fun and aggressive,” sophomore Hanna Garret said.

They also find themselves bonding, just as Enderson hoped.

“I like to play basketball and I like my teammates,” freshman Audrey Voris said.

Clearly, JV girls basketball has much to look forward to this year. The team will be starting their next pre-league tournament on Dec. 26.
