The junior varsity boys soccer team started off their season a little different than usual. The decision to not have a freshman boys soccer team leaves all freshman boys fighting for a spot on JV.
For those who make it it’s a great victory as they start out their high school career on junior varsity. But in a way it’s a victory for the future JV team as well.
With a young team full of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors the future of the junior varsity squad looks bright.
Although many of the players are young, this just means that they have more time to grow and gain more experience for the games to come.
“When I heard that there wasn’t going to be a freshman team I was a little nervous,” freshman Tanner Bolin said. “But when I found out I made the team I was excited to be on JV.”
But this team consists of more than just freshmen. With the help of the underclassmen’s older teammates, they could learn a lot to better their team.
Some older teammates didn’t like the idea of having that many freshmen on the team at first. But they soon came to realize that they were as beneficial on the team as anybody else.
“When I heard that there might be a bunch of freshmen on the team I was a little hesitant,” junior Ryan Brown said. “But as I practiced with them more I understood that we weren’t losing anything by having them on the team and that they were actually good, if not better than, some of the people older than them.”
Realizing that this is going to be the team, Brown and his teammates try to focus on the upcoming season instead of what has already happened.
Their first game resulted in a 2-0 loss to El Camino. But being a young team that only played one game, this 0-1 record doesn’t seem to depict their future.
“It was kind of a tough loss since we definitely should’ve beaten them,” junior Akim Akimi said. “But we still got a lot to learn as a team so we’re just going to look forward and work harder towards wins in the future.”
As winter break arrives the boys just use that as an advantage to gain skill, and most importantly, teamwork.
