Familiarity is a trait that is rarely found on JV teams but is now a distinct advantage that this years’ JV boys basketball team possesses.
“We’ve played for a long time, together on one team…we’re friends in school…we’ve always just stuck together,” sophomore Charlie Andrews said.
This helps for many reasons, according to sophomore captain Thomas Haden.
“Being familiar with your teammates is very helpful because we know each other’s strengths and also how each person likes to play,” Haden said.
Still in pre-season, the boys are currently undefeated, with a record of 6-0.
Among their stand-out games has been their only home game, which was against Christian High School. They won with a resounding score of 63-28.
“The game went very well; we played them as if they were any other team,” Andrews said.
With an impressive record, the team still knows it is important to give all of their efforts.
“We will be successful this year if we follow our coach and give every game all our effort,” Haden said. “We have a good chance at coming out on top this year.”
The team has a new coach this year, Aaron Smith, but the transition from coach to coach went smoothly, according to sophomore Chase Morgan.
“He’s got his own way of doing things…our team is used to it because we’ve basically gotten a new coach every year since 8th grade,” Morgan said.
“Our coach prepares us by pushing us harder, so that when we do play teams [at our level], we will be ready,” Haden said. “He also keeps us in line by making us run if we aren’t giving it our all.”
The entire team is made up of last year’s freshman team, which went undefeated throughout their season.
Their goal for this season is to go undefeated once again.
“[Our goal is] to win all of our games in league,” Morgan said.
Stand-out players include captains and sophomores Jeremy McGirr and Thomas Haden.
The official league games start in January, after their annual “Holiday Hoops” tournament. With team and individual goals set, the team is ready to set out and achieve those goals.
“We expect to win league again; hopefully we’ll just do well as a team and have a winning season,” Andrews said.
