Drama performs in Fullerton

With butterflies in her stomach, freshman Kayla Schaffroth walks into the performing room. Her group’s performance quickly progresses, and they soon end with their “great finale.” Relief sweeps over her as the judges thank and dismiss the group.

This year’s annual Fullerton Theatre Festival brought together many outstanding drama programs from all around the state, including MC’s very own drama team. Theatre games, which is improvisation, ten-minute plays, and monologues, were just a few of the events that MC took part in on March 12 and 13.

Over the weekend, MC’s drama students delivered several astounding performances at CSU Fullerton College.

Due to the significance of the festival, many drama students felt rather nervous.

“It’s a lot more nerve racking than an actual performance at school,” Piotrowicz said.

Unlike most drama performances, the ones at Fullerton were done in a classroom. Piotrowicz describes the judges as “up close and personal” when they are performing.

“It’s really weird, you are pretty much in a classroom and you don’t know what the judges are thinking,” Sobejana said.

Even though it was really nerve-racking with the judges watching them real close, MC’s drama students didn’t let the pressure get to them. As a result, they were able to get to finals in not only monologues, but in theatre games too.

“It was pretty big since it was our first time getting into finals for improvisation,” senior Alec Sobejana said.

The competition not only brought out impressive performances, but mixed feelings too.

“I felt confident but at the same time nervous,” junior Emily Piotrowicz said. “I mean you are always worried about what people are going to think about you.”

Although MC’s drama didn’t win anything, they were anything but disappointed.

“It just shows how good the theatre world is and how much harder you have to work to get there,” Schaffroth said. “It’s really good motivation.”
